Restricted Poly-Time SAT-Solvable CNF’s

چکیده
This article, from an algorithmic point of view, studies the satisfiability problem SAT restricted to a CNF fraction MHF whose members consist of a Horn formula and a 2-CNF part. In general SAT is NP-complete for such formulas. We consider various structurally defined subclasses of MHF, for which SAT can be solved in polynomial time. The instances defined here are required to have a linear, or even exact-linear Horn part. Moreover, the 2-CNF part is required to be of specific graph structure, e.g., disjoint edges or disjoint triangles. Further poly-time classes are presented, for which the Horn part is not forced to be linear.

#2,2-sat Is Solvable in Linear-time
A linear-time algorithm, with respect to the size of the instance Boolean formula, is presented for the #SAT problem restricted to formulae of the form #2; 2-CF, i.e. formulae whose clauses have just two literals and in which each variable appears at most twice.
متن کاملA criterion for "easiness" of certain SAT problems
A generalized 1-in-3SAT problem is defined and found to be in complexity class P when restricted to a certain subset of CNF expressions. In particular, 1-in-kSAT with no restrictions on the number of literals per clause can be decided in polynomial time when restricted to exact READ-3 formulas with equal number of clauses (m) and variables (n), and no pure literals. Also individual instances ca...
متن کاملWorst-Case Upper Bounds
There are many algorithms for testing satisfiability — how to evaluate and compare them? It is common (but still disputable) to identify the efficiency of an algorithm with its worst-case complexity. From this point of view, asymptotic upper bounds on the worst-case running time and space is a criterion for evaluation and comparison of algorithms. In this chapter we survey ideas and techniques ...
متن کاملDoes Looking Inside a Circuit Help?
The Black-Box Hypothesis, introduced by Barak et al. [BGI12], states that any property of boolean functions decided efficiently (e.g., in BPP) with inputs represented by circuits can also be decided efficiently in the black-box setting, where an algorithm is given an oracle access to the input function and an upper bound on its circuit size. If this hypothesis is true, then P 6= NP. We focus on...
متن کاملTime Complexity of Constraint Satisfaction via Universal Algebra
The exponential-time hypothesis (ETH) states that 3-SAT is not solvable in subexponential time, i.e. not solvable in O(c) time for arbitrary c > 1, where n denotes the number of variables. Problems like k-SAT can be viewed as special cases of the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP), which is the problem of determining whether a set of constraints is satisfiable. In this paper we study the wor...
